The supposed upgrade in the workshop of the Scorpion III Harpoon Launcher to a Level 4 Harpoon Launcher (the only upgrade possible for the Scorpion) is actually a downgrade.
While the damage per hit is raised slightly, the scatter factor is increased for a net loss. This net loss of average damage per shot fired is greater and greater as the player's experience level increases.

I would suggest the BP team should find a solution for this, like creating another possible upgrade result that could be an actual UP-grade. The upgrade tree for cannons is far more robust. Some of the upgrades for cannons offer four or five possible results.

It appears that I as wrong when I spoke above about the "Net loss of averaage damage" being greater as the player's experience level increases. It appears the player's Experience Level affects the damage caused by cannons, but has no direct effect on Harpoon damage. However, this deficit in average damage due to the increased scatter % is magnified when using some of the Captain's Orders or the Scrolls of Power for Sharp Spears.

The problem could be solved if the Scorpion launchers were classified at the same level in the Workshop Upgrade Tree as the the Class 4 Launcher . While one caused more damage with an actual hit the other is mor likely to get a hit. The average net damage of these two classes, at the same Levels, are within a close range. On Level I the Class 4 Launcher has a slight advantage, and at Level III the Scorpion has a slght advantage.

That would not be a hard change for the BP programmers to make.

  4. Completely agree and I had been meaning to post about this. Glad someone did it. I have 28 lvl3 Scorpions that I have not upgraded because like he said it would actually be a downgrade! I have choosen to upgrade my class 4 launchers and higher first and leave those scorpions as my last upgrades since i have to downgrade them to class 4 launchers first to later actuall get an upgrade. It's dumb that i spend materials, gold and time to downgrade my scorpion lvl3 launchers to class 4 launchers! Please do something about this problem BP!

  5. And to add insult to injury we have a 50% chance of the class 4 dropping again to a "Repeating launcher". So unless I have enough copper to superior upgrade a "repeating launcher" I will not risk upgrading a "4" either (unless it is an extra).

  6. Oh yeah! I forgot about that one as well. How is a Repeating launcher and upgrade to a Class 4 launcher!? If anything Repeating launchers should be on the same tier as Class 4s.

Those upgrades are dumb because they are actually downgrades!

You guys are right about the Repeating Launchers also being a step back, again. Bottom line is if you have a Scorpion Level 3 that you want to upgrade, you will have to go through three upgrades costing gold and other resources to get back to essentially where you started (only a miniscule improvement is seeen from the Scorpion Level III to the Class 4 Level III, and that advantage is completely lost if you are using Steel harpoons.) If you then try to upgrade again from Class 4 Level III launchers there is a fifty-fifty chance of needing three more upgrades to derive any benefit from all your expenditures. That amounts to five full workshop upgrades, several million in gold, and dozens of other material resources expended without any derived benefit.

A Level II Repeating Launcher has the same average damage per shot fired as a Level III Scorpion. Only at Level III does the Repeating Launcher exceed the effectiveness of a Level III Scorpion!

    BP, Please reexamine this issue.
