getting killed by other players

Hi I keep getting killed by what looks like other players in bigger and better ships outwith the duel option.Can u do this?

Yes,
Zone 13+ anybody can sink anybody, zones 5 to zone 12 you must be around there level to sink them.
Zones 1-4 are zones where nobody can sink nobody. If your super little stay in zones 1-4 If your little older stay in ones 1-12 If you feel like you wanna move higher chance of getting sink by anybody. I am level 28 with is Fist of Icegard, so it also matter what ship you have to win. Or you can go with an friend to help you. If your in zones 1-12and there lot older than you in level they can not help.
When you level up you also loose the chance to farm in low level zones the. You will have to farm in zones 13-32, but don't worry that will be an while if your a young player.

Thanks Troywa65 and ChasJohnLadbrook. As outlined by Troywa65 there are both limited pvp zones and open pvp zones in which one can be attacked without dueling. In limited pvp zones one can only be attacked by players within close level range to your own whilst open pvp zones one can be attacked and attack anyone regardless of level.

One can however take advantage of many of the in game social systems to progress in the game. Creating groups with friends and joining a guild that can help you learn the game and build your account are good means of progressing. Ship choice can also be an influence on whether or not you are attacked in limited / open pvp zones due to the fact that each ship gives skulls and pvp the first time you are sunk by someone (reset daily).
